Father’s Day 2020

I’ve been estranged from my father since I was 11 years old, that’s over 20 years. Even before I migrated to America, we never had much of a relationship as he wasn’t active in me and my sisters lives. I held on that to hurt and resentment for a long time. This morning I woke up determined not to call nor text him for Father’s Day as I’ve done for so many years. I felt that he didn’t deserve it . I opened my bible app to do my morning devotion and just as I expected the devotion was centered around fathers and Father’s Day. To my surprise however, the writer chose to focus on those who have difficult relationships with their fathers, just as he had. I almost chuckled because I couldn’t help but think that God definitely has a sense of humor. The devotion focused on the commandment that says “honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long upon the land that the Lord your God gives you”. I always struggled with this commandment because not only is it the only one that has a promise attached to it, I didn’t know how or why I should be obligated to honor someone who I believed didn’t honor me. Today’s devotion put a lot of things in perspective for me. Even though my feelings are very valid, as a Christian I’m called to obey God. I’m called to extend the same grace and mercy to everyone that God extends to me on a daily basis. After reading my devotion, I not only called my father but I also had my son wish him a happy Father’s Day as well. And you know what, it didn’t kill me to do so. I don’t expect everything to be resolved in one day but I felt good knowing that I was able to do what God asked and expected of me. So maybe you’re like me and never really celebrated Father’s Day or feel like you shouldn’t reach out. I urge you to step out boldly in faith and let God do the rest. He’s never let me down before and I know that he won’t let you down either. Be Blessed ❤️

  1. Yes God has a sense of humor. Always searching our hearts and revealing truth to us at at the right moment. Love this!!! Being like Christ is always being the bigger person.

  2. Dear Charlyn, the most important part if this Eye Opener is ” I’m called to obey God. I’m called to extend the same grace and mercy to everyone that God extends to me on a daily basis.” And that is transforming my dear, I am absolutely proud if you!!! And so is Your Heavenly Father
